The New Economy Project and Southwest Brooklyn Tenant Union (SWBTU) are hosting a screening of the iconic documentary Rabble Rousers, followed by a panel on community controlled housing today!! We'll be talking about the history of tenant resistance, building tenant power, Community Land Trusts, and how the lessons of Cooper Square can inform the fight for housing justice.
About the film:
Rabble Rousers highlights the power of tenant organizing in the face of displacement, showing how ordinary people come together to fight for control over their homes and neighborhoods.
This struggle echoes the history of the Cooper Square Community Land Trust, where Lower East Side residents resisted the top-down redevelopment plans of Robert Moses. Instead of being pushed out, they organized for community control—ultimately creating permanently affordable, resident-governed housing. The film captures the spirit of tenant resistance, but building power and shaping their own future.
